North Koreans' Silence
Title
North Koreans' Silence
Description
This piece of embroidery aims to demonstrate how political systems and our perceptions of others makes entire populations become invisible. In this piece, North and South Korea are represented with the same words (mothers, fathers, sons, daughters, friends, etc), written in red in South Korea because they are seen by the global community and white in North Korea because they are invisible, When you think of North Korea, you think about a government system not the people. In South Korea, you think about the popular culture, food, music, cars, etc. There is a lot more associated with South Korea than North Korea.
Their invisibility is due to the political system and our portrayal of an entire country, our lack of understanding and knowledge about how little we know about the actual humans that live there.
